Peterson has traits to be effective Salem mayor
I have known Anna Peterson for many years as a fellow Rotarian, community activist and friend.
It is always a joy to work with Anna on a project as she is thorough in her research of an issue or topic,
fair in her analysis, determined in her effort and diligent in completing her responsibilities. These are all
traits that will make Anna a strong and effective mayor for the city of Salem.
I urge you to join me in voting for Anna Peterson to become Salem's next mayor.

Anna Peterson for Mayor Announcement Statement
I’m Anna Peterson, and I welcome this opportunity to announce my candidacy for mayor of Salem.
In the almost three decades that my husband and I have lived in Salem, I have grown to love this city and felt compelled to volunteer my time and energy to making it a healthy, vibrant, economically sound place to live and to make a living, and raise a family.
As an active volunteer, I learned that Salem is blessed with individuals, businesses and organizations that pull together to fix a problem or meet a need. Our private sector links with the public sector, businesses link with non-profits, and individuals from many walks of life join together to get a job done. We saw this over and over during the NO METH – Not In MY Neighborhood work, and again as Salem vied for, won, and then built our beautiful new Kroc Center.
As a leader on projects in Salem, I saw it again and again—personally experiencing this cooperation and collaboration. As President of the Salem Public Library Foundation during the expanding and refurbishing of our library, as President of the Historic Elsinore Theatre when we restored the theatre to its original grandeur, as President of the Oregon Symphony Association in Salem working to bring the Oregon Symphony here for regular evening and children’s concerts, and as Co-Founder and Chair of NO METH – Not In MY Neighborhood fighting meth across our community, I have had the opportunity to lead individuals committed to weaving a stronger fabric to lift and bind our diverse community together.
As a business person I know the importance of meeting payroll, paying taxes and providing a safe and secure workplace. As employees thrive, their families thrive and the community grows stronger. As Chair of SEDCOR for two terms, I saw that jobs, and the revenue and taxes they provide, go to fund much-needed public services and projects. Individuals and businesses can contribute to non-profits and community activities only when their own economic stability is assured. Healthy businesses and a strong employment base are the underpinnings for a secure and thriving community.
The mayor of Salem has the opportunity to lead the council in sound decision-making that allows the community to prosper and play its proper role. Salem deserves that type of mayor.
The mayor of Salem has the opportunity to involve the community in decision-making and in building strong neighborhoods and community facilities. Our city is only as strong as its neighborhoods. As the city grows and changes, it will be important to protect the livability of our neighborhoods. Salem deserves that type of mayor.
The mayor of Salem has the opportunity to keep our city safe by supporting public safety budgets and bond measures, and by encouraging every resident to do their part to make neighborhoods safe and secure. Salem deserves that type of mayor.
The mayor of Salem has the opportunity to encourage businesses to stay here, and to attract others to bring their family wage jobs and resources here. Salem deserves that type of mayor.
The mayor of Salem has the opportunity to build upon the relationships that have been developed between the city including law enforcement, and our minority communities. The mayor must listen to and involve people of all creeds, colors and walks of life in building our city of the future. Salem deserves that type of mayor.
I pledge to you today that when I am elected mayor of Salem, I will be that type of mayor. I will work every day to make Salem the city we all can be proud to call our home.
Before I close, I should make this clear: I understand that the vision I have set forth of an improving Salem is not a one-person job. Others must and will step up and help—during this campaign and after the election.
Budgets are tight in government and private businesses. Our community faces the pressures of high unemployment and reduced government services. Community problem solving and individual volunteers are needed more now than ever in the past. Government is not going to solve our problems for us. I have dedicated much of my time to community service, and I am ready to lead the residents in Stepping Up for Salem. Thank you.
I have known Anna for years and her desire for a better Salem is consistent and sincere.
